Tofu Steak with French Fries Recipe

- 2 x 280g blocks of extra firm tofu, each block cut into 6 thick slices
- 4 tomatoes Marinade:

- 700g potatoes, scrubbed
- 1 tablespoon rapeseed oil
- 1 tablespoon sesame seeds
- 1 teaspoon vegetable bouillon powder
- ½ teaspoon Chinese five-spice Mashed Peas:
- 320g frozen peas
- 20g cilantro
- 12 spring onions, trimmed and chopped
Cooking Steps:
Step 1: Marinating Tofu
- Mix all the marinade ingredients in a shallow bowl, then dip tofu slices in the mixture until completely coated. Set aside.
Step 2: Making Sesame Chips 2. Preheat the oven to 200°C. Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Trim the ends of the potatoes and slice them. Boil for 5 minutes, then drain. Pour rapeseed oil onto a large baking tray, arrange potato slices, ensuring they’re not overlapping. Place the tray in the oven and bake for 20 minutes. In another bowl, mix sesame seeds, vegetable bouillon powder, and Chinese five-spice. Sprinkle the mixture evenly over the potato slices, then bake for another 5 minutes until golden. Step 3: Pan-frying Tofu and Tomatoes 3. Heat a frying pan or skillet and pan-fry half of the tofu slices for about 10 minutes until lightly golden, flipping occasionally. Cut two tomatoes in half and place them cut-side down in the pan for the last 1-2 minutes of cooking, or leave uncooked if desired. Step 4: Making Mashed Peas 4. Meanwhile, in a separate pot, bring water to a boil and cook peas for about 5 minutes until soft, then drain, reserving the cooking water. Blend peas, cilantro, spring onions, and 6-8 tablespoons of the cooking water until smooth. Serve half of the potato wedges, tofu, mashed peas, and cooked tomatoes separately on plates. Store the remaining portions refrigerated and reheat as per steps 3 and 4 when needed.
